How To Avoid Health Care Scammers

With the government officially out of shutdown mode, and the Affordable Care Act (or Obamacare) still very much upheld, it is now possible for you to sign up for health insurance under the new legislation. While you likely want to rush out and get coverage as soon as possible, it is important to be wary. Thieves are out there posing as insurance representatives who can steal your credit card information, your social security or even your bank account numbers. Don’t be duped! Instead follow some of these helpful tips from Jeffers Trucking Insurance to avoid health care scammers:

1) Stick with an insurance company you know and trust if you’re buying coverage directly from an insurance company rather than using the government marketplace. If you’ve never heard of the company before, make sure you do your research to see if they are legitimate. A lot of times, these scamming companies will take your money and information and walk away.

2) There are no government workers “checking the accuracy” of your personal medical information so they can “update” it for the Affordable Care Act. If you receive a call or a visitor that claims to be one of these people, it is a scam.

3) You can call 800-318-2596 for honest information about the Affordable Care Act. This is a toll-free phone number to the official federal government Health Insurance Marketplace call center. Should you get a call from someone claiming to be with an insurance company or the government, ask them to give you a web address to look up more information.

4) Don’t believe anyone who says the law makes everyone buy new insurance policies, because it is not true. If you already have insurance, you do not need to enroll in insurance through the Affordable Care Act.

5) Don’t let anyone tell you a new card is required under the Affordable Care Act. These cards do not exist, and they are not required to be enrolled. This is just a scam to get your credit card and social security information so avoid it.

When you don’t know information about the Affordable Care Act, you risk being at the mercy of scammers.
