One of the biggest fears our industry has is cargo theft, especially around the U.S./Mexico border where it has been a problem in the past. New data from Freightwatch suggests that the problem is going away in some areas and only getting worse in others.
Reports show that cargo thefts from commercial trucks in the U.S. are down for the second straight quarter. In the period from March – May 2013, 185 thefts were tallied. This is down 16% from the 199 thefts reported in the previous period. Unfortunately, it is not all good news. The average value of those losses has increased 9% from $133,711 to $156,408.
Per usual, the most reported items stolen were food and drinks, which accounted for 27% of the cargo stolen. Not surprisingly, states along the U.S./Mexico border – California and Texas – remained the states with the most thefts. If you’re looking for ways to make your cargo more safe avoid unsecured parking, as those were the most common spots targeted by cargo thieves.
